Job description:

A Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) is a corporate executive responsible for business strategy development, analytics and balance sheet management of the company. As the leader of strategic planning processes, the CSO may be involved in business development, partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, divestments, branching into new businesses, and refining the company’s core business. The chief strategy officer job is a senior management position that reports to a company’s chief financial officer (CFO).

Please note that the position requires relocation to Armenia.

Responsibilities:

  • Market analysis: The chief strategy officer assesses the business landscape and looks for short-term and long-term corporate development opportunities.
  • Risk assessment: In addition to looking for market opportunities, the CSO examines strategic risks and advises the leadership team and board of directors on those risks.
  • Strategic vision: The CSO helps craft company’s strategic vision and strategy, helps understand external risks and opportunities, as well as assess internal capabilities to guide the company towards accomplishing its mission and vision.
  • Partnerships, divestments, mergers, and acquisitions: The CSO would also oversee the divestment of any business unit, acquisition of new businesses, or a merger with another company. Strategic partnerships and large projects should be assessed by the CSO to formulate respective recommendation to relevant teams. The CSO should also follow developments in the industry to ensure that best practice is applied in the company.
  • Strategy execution: The CSO may present strategic initiatives to fellow stakeholders on the executive team. Such initiatives could involve revamping a product line, introducing new products or services, expanding the business into new markets, or expanding into new industries. The CSO is also responsible for monitoring strategy execution, coming up with recommendations and potential changes in the strategy of the company, based on the changing environment and market opportunities.
  • Leadership: The CSO may be included in different decision making bodies to enable better efficiency of operations as well as should be engaged in informal discussion and teamworks to help make better decisions improve efficiency of execution. The CSO should lead teams reporting to him and help them with methodology formulation, execution and business process optimization.
  • Business planning: The CSO is also responsible for drafting business plan, based on internal and external analytical materials. Business case development for large initiatives should also be done or controlled by the CSO. This may also assume development of financial models for assessing efficiency of different propositions and units of the company.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a preference for an advanced degree: A master’s or PhD degree in business administration, strategy development, finance, management or economics will be considered an advantage.
  • Financial management and analytical abilities: The CSO should have relevant knowledge and background to be able to assess market opportunities. He/she should retain relevant tools to do customer and other internal analytics that would serve as base for strategy formation.
  • Strong project management skills: Chief strategy officers oversee various company initiatives and must be able to lead teams toward achieving strategic priorities. Being tech-savvy will also be considered as an advantage for this position.
  • Strong communication skills and leadership: As a senior manager, the CSO must communicate effectively with all stakeholders and lead his/her team towards delivery on all the responsibilities. He/she should be able to effectively communicate strategy to all stakeholders to ensure maximum alignments to top corporate goals.
  • Quality control skills: The CSO must be on the ground, regularly monitoring strategy implementation, following results of different initiatives and tying those results to relevant metrics to measure the success of interim milestones to key projects.
