About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.

About the Position

The Research Officer (Political economy), supports the Embassy’s work on a wide range of topics, including Russia’s political system, social and economic policies and regional and international relations. You may also be responsible for other countries to which the Embassy is accredited. Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills are required for this role.

Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

Political economy research on issues relevant to bilateral relations between Australia and Russia (or other countries of accreditation), with a focus on Russia’s domestic and international economy, trade and commerce, as well as Russia’s participation in multilateral economic forums (e.g. G20, WTO).
Monitor the media daily and identify issues of interest, with a focus on economic developments.
Provide succinct and timely written and oral reports in English.
Support Australian officials in their professional interactions to advance Australia’s position on bilateral or international issues.
Provide interpretation and translation support to Australian officials in Russia and during travel to countries of accreditation.
Provide backup for other members of the political/economic research and public diplomacy team and support administrative and representational functions of the Embassy where required.

Qualifications/Experience

Formal qualifications in economics or political economy, with a substantial quantitative component.
A very strong knowledge of Russian history, society, and politics.
Professional-level fluency in English and Russian.
Strong written communication skills in English, including the ability to organise written material succinctly, clearly and cogently.
Ability to interpret English-Russian, and Russian-English.
Ability to produce high-quality written translations of Russian official documents, including newspaper editorials and Government statements.
Strong research and analytical skills, including demonstrated initiative in providing timely and relevant information.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to contribute to the effective functioning of teams.
