The Sustainability Specialist at the Eurasian Development Bank plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development principles and ensuring that the bank's projects align with leading environmental, social, and governance standards. As a crucial member of the Sustainability team, the specialist will be responsible for integrating ESG and climate considerations into investment decisions, monitoring the bank's portfolio for adherence to ESG criteria, and fostering productive relationships with stakeholders to enhance the bank's sustainability initiatives.

Key responsibilities:

  • ESG Integration: collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to embed ESG factors into the bank's investment strategies and decision-making processes. Conduct comprehensive ESG assessments of potential projects, evaluating their environmental impact, social implications, and governance practices.
  • ESG standards compliance: stay abreast of international ESG standards, best practices, and industry trends, ensuring that the bank's activities align with global sustainability benchmarks.
  • Policy development: assist in formulating and implementing ESG policies, guidelines, and frameworks that guide the bank's investment activities in line with sustainable development objectives.
  • Project due diligence: Perform thorough ESG due diligence for new investment opportunities, identifying potential risks and opportunities related to environmental, social, and governance aspects.
  • Impact assessment: monitor and evaluate the social and environmental impacts of the bank's projects, track progress toward sustainability targets, and recommend improvements as needed.
  • Stakeholder engagement: engage proactively with external stakeholders, including MDBs/DFI peers, ESG Rating Agencies, government bodies, industry associations, global standards bodies, NGOs, and local communities, to foster collaboration, gather feedback, and address concerns pertaining to the bank's ESG efforts.
  • Capacity building: organize and facilitate training sessions and workshops for bank staff and project partners to raise awareness of ESG principles and best practices, cultivating a culture of sustainability across the organization.
  • ESG Reporting: prepare regular and transparent non-financial reports for senior management, stakeholders, and relevant regulatory bodies, ensuring accurate documentation of the bank's sustainability performance.
  • Collection and analysis of sustainability-related data.
  • Translation of documents, engagement with solutions providers and general administrative tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree is required. Specializations, Master's/MBA's, PhD or other advanced programs/degrees in environmental studies, sustainability, social sciences, finance, business administration, economics, engineering or a related field are preferred.
  • Sustainability/ESG/climate or finance related certifications are a plus.
  • Relevant experience of at least 1 – 3 years in the field (work in a consulting, financial or real economy company). More years of experience will be considered a plus.
  • Proven experience in ESG and climate analysis, sustainability assessment, or relevant fields, ideally within the financial or public development sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of ESG principles, international sustainability/ESG/climate-finance principles, standards, frameworks and sustainable development goals.
  • Familiarity with relevant environmental and social legislations and regulations (including local and regional that are related to the member states) and their application within the banking and investment context.
  • Solid analytical skills and the ability to conduct ESG and climate risk assessments and impact evaluations, being able to articulate different viewpoints.
  • Strong logical thinker, with proficiency in data analysis tools and reporting metrics and ability to overcome data quality challenges with creative solutions, including familiarity with alternative, unstructured market and project data.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, streamlining daily activities and schedule tasks based on importance, prioritization and tight deadlines, having a propositional posture, without depending on interventions and/or active supervision.
  • Passion for performance and oriented with a continuous improvement mindset, always considering the revision of the existing internal procedures and processes of the Directorate, researching for continues improvement, including administrative and organizational efficiency opportunities (reporting, standardization of processes, ease of access to information, improved transparency, etc.), being always up to date with the latest global trends.
  • Fast learner, self-motivated, pro-active, manifesting an extraordinary enthusiasm for accomplishing tasks and actively pursuing goals with a results-oriented mindset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal abilities to engage effectively with a diverse set of stakeholders and work with a multi-cultural and geographically distributed team.
  • A passion for sustainable development and a commitment to promoting positive change through responsible investment practices.
  • Fluency in Russian and English. Knowledge of other European languages is a plus.
  • Availability for business trips and to attend meetings and events, if necessary.
